Javardo
The meaning of a toponym

The name Javardo is usually associated with the domestic and wild pigs or wild boar as well. In fact, there were wild boars in these lands. But as we all know things are not always as they appear, we leave here another story for you.
Nowadays the Vinho Verde vineyards abound at these lands, so as the corn fields, fruit trees, chestnut, and olive trees. But it wasn't always that way. More than 300 years ago, the landscape was dominated by cereal plantations, especially corn and wheat, along with fruits trees, Vinho Verde, chestnuts and olive trees. Nothing is left today of those large-scale cereal plantations, but, interestingly, the name Javardo was a term used to refer to a variety of wheat that existed in some regions of Portugal.
Therefore, do not be surprised when you find some old and picturesque mills, silent witness remnant of those antique times where a lot of Javardo bread was milled.
